Female Christian Role Model of the Day: Lucy Webb Hayes

Welcome to my celebration of Women's History Month! You can read more about this month and why I am writing about admirable Christian women here. For now, let's jump in!

The Forgiven Former Feminist's Female Christian Role Model of the Day is...  Lucy Webb Hayes!

Lucy Webb Hayes was the wife of President Rutherford B. Hayes, the nineteenth President of the United States of America. President and Mrs. Hayes both came from very conservative backgrounds and the two saw no reason to change their behavior upon entering the White House. As the first college educated First Lady (she graduated with honors from Wesleyan Female Seminary in 1852) Lucy Hayes was a model Christian during her time in the White House. She made the tradition of having hymnals available on Sunday nights so that everyone could participate in worship. Hayes was also a fantastic hostess, she made it a point to make the White House a welcoming and beautiful place.

So why is Lucy Webb Hayes on my list? Hayes believed in the importance of the home and family. She did not let a crazy schedule or the demanding position of First Lady take away from her primary calling: ministry to her family and those around her. She is a true Proverbs 31 Woman.
