Christian Female Role Model of the Day: Lydia

Welcome to my celebration of Women's History Month! You can read more about this month and why I am writing about admirable Christian women here. For now, let's jump in!

The Forgiven Former Feminist's Female Christian Role Model of the Day is... Lydia!

So who is Lydia? Lydia is a saleswoman or merchant of some kind in Philippi. Originally from Thyatira it is clear that she was very successful in her career.

So why do we care about Lydia? She is called a "God worshiper" or a Gentile that went to Jewish services. But that isn't what is most significant about her. What is amazing about Lydia is the fact that she is credited as being the first Christian convert on the European continent. She listened to Paul's description of Jesus Christ and she believed. Not only did she believe but she then opened her home up to Paul, Timothy, Silas, and Luke. Through these men, the gospel of Christ was spread. Although there isn't proof of Lydia evangelizing, through her hospitality she helped to ensure that the good news was spread. Lydia is a great example of taking the gifts that God has given you and using them for His glory!

  1. I love Lydia's story. She is instantly ready to obey God in baptism, then to obey again by opening her home. All those years of prayer and fear of God culminate in this heart ready to step up as soon as she sees what he wants her to do!
