Female Christian Role Model of the Day: Vittoria Colonna

Welcome to my celebration of Women's History Month! You can read more about this month and why I am writing about admirable Christian women here. For now, let's jump in!

The Forgiven Former Feminist's Female Christian Role Model of the Day is...  Vittoria Colonna!

Vittoria Colonna was an Italian poet and noblewoman. She was beautiful, educated and well-spoken. Colonna was one of the most popular poets in Italy during the sixteenth century. She was widowed at a fairly young age, which allowed her to work even more on her writing.

So why did Vittoria Colonna make it on to my list? Vittoria was a dear friend of the famous artist Michelangelo. In fact, his drawing of a "Deposition from the Cross" (where Christ's body is being removed from the cross by a pair of angels) was painted for Vittoria to mark their friendship. There are letters from Michelangelo to Vittoria in which he shows his devotion for her and his need for her opinion and advice. It is said that Vittoria was so Christlike in her behavior and so above reproach that she helped to focus Michelangelo's faith. She represented the best of the Renaissance to Michelangelo. She was solid in her faith and encouraged everyone around her to do the same.
