Welcome to my celebration of Women's History Month! You can read more about this month and why I am writing about admirable Christian women here. For now, let's jump in!
The Forgiven Former Feminist's Female Christian Role Model of the Day is... Jane Haining!
Jane Haining was a champion for her students. A Scottish missionary sent to Budapest, Hungary, Haining dedicated her life to educating and caring for the children in her care while she was the matron of her school. As things in Hungary worsened due to WWI, all Scottish missionaries were called back home. Haining refused to leave her mostly Jewish students. When the Nazis invaded Hungary, they came to her school and arrested Haining for working with Jews and for visiting British prisoners of war. Haining was then sent to Auschwitz where she died of starvation.
So why did Jane Haining make it on to my list? Haining didn't have to stay in Hungary, in fact the people above her called her back to Scotland for her safety. Haining stayed behind to be there for the children that she dedicated her life to. She stood up or what she believed in, no matter the cost and she paid the ultimate price while ministering to the people Christ came to save, the persecuted and the lost.
